Cultural Care:

Dategrowing today in the warm, fertile Coachella Valley is very different from the primitive Old World industry from which it evolved. In order to produce high quality dates, particularly the Medjool variety, extensive cultural care during farming and meticulous handling during the cleaning, grading and packing operations is required.

Dethorning the Trees:

Thorns that grow along the base of each leaf frond extend about 3 to 4 inches and can be very hazardous to those working and caring for the palms.
Consequently, in January the thorns are removed with a special curved knife.

Pollinating the Trees:

Oasis Date Gardens, located in the heart of Coachella Valley has borrowed the "harem" idea from the Old World in that one male palm presides over an acre or about 50 female palms

• The pollination process starts by first removing the male pollen flowers from the male palm
• The pollen powder is then collected for the pollination process.
• Each female bloom must be pollinated by the pollen from a male palm.
